Araw ng Kagitingan: Celebrating Modern Day Heroes

Today is Araw ng Kagitingan or the Day of Valor where we commemorate our heroes in the Fall of Bataan and at the same time celebrating modern day heroes!

Araw ng Kagitingan is a national regular holiday here in the Philippines, it commemorates the Fall of Bataan back in World War II.

In 1942, The Filipino and American forces fought in a raging war in the months of January to April of the said year. April 9, 1942 marked the start of the Bataan Death March as the commander of the Luzon Force, Major General Edward P. King Jr. surrendered more than 76,000 soldiers that were starving and had ailments. He surrendered against the orders of General Douglas McArthur.

The American and Filipino Soldiers were forced to march towards San Fernando, Pampanga that was 60 kilometers away. The captive soldiers who couldn’t survive the long and gruelling walk were left to die.

Thousands of Filipino soldiers and hundreds of American soldiers died from the Bataan Death March.

Today we commemorate our fallen soldiers in the Fall of Bataan while also celebrating our modern day heroes.

During this time of pandemic, we are celebrating our modern day heroes, our medical frontliners, food delivery riders, ambulance drivers, nurses and all of the people who risk their lives everyday to provide for their families and to help our fellow people.

Thank you to all of our heroes of today and all of our heroes in the past, commemorating and celebrating the events in our history is essential to our nation-building and recovery.

Araw ng Kagitingan is a National Regular Holiday in which, according to DOLE labor advisory 04-2021, they advised the following payment of wages:

• If the employee did not work, they will be paid 100% of their wages for the day.
• If the employee does work on the day, they will be paid 200% of their wages for the day.
• If the employee works in excess of 8 hours (overtime), they will receive an additional 30% of their hourly rate. (Hourly rate of basic wage x 200% x 130% x number of hours worked)
• If the employee works on a regular holiday that also falls on their rest day, they will receive an additional 30% of their daily wage of 200%. [(Basic wage + COLA) x 200%) + [30% (Basic wage x 200%)]
• If the employee works in excess of 8 hours (overtime) on a regular holiday that also falls on their rest day, they will receive an additional 30% of their hourly rate. (Hourly rate of the basic wage x 200% x 130% x 30% x number of hours worked).
