For Philippine employers, getting holiday pay right isn’t just a good practice; it’s following the labor law. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has clear guidelines on holiday types and pay rates, and mistakes can lead to penalties, unhappy employees, and damage to your company’s reputation.
For HR and business leaders, understanding holiday categories, pay rules, and compliance tips will help you treat your employees fairly and avoid costly errors.
In the Philippines, holidays fall under three categories: Regular Holiday, Special Non-Working Holidays and Special Working Holidays.
These are national holidays mandated by law. Employees get 100% of their daily wage even if they don’t work on these days.
Examples (2026): New Year’s Day (January 1), Independence Day (June 12), Christmas Day (December 25)
These holidays are declared by law or presidential proclamation but do not provide automatic pay if the employee does not work.
Examples (2026): Ninoy Aquino Day (August 21), All Saints’ Day (November 1)
These are working days with no additional premium pay. Employees working on these days receive their regular daily wage.
Examples (if declared): National Elections, special proclamations
Below are the DOLE-prescribed computation rules for each type of holiday:
| Work Status | Pay Computation |
| Did not work | 100% of daily wage |
| Worked (on workday) | 200% of daily wage |
| Worked on rest day | 260% of daily wage (200% + 30%) |
Examples:
If an employee doesn’t work on a Regular Holiday, they still get 100% of their daily wage.
Example: PHP 700 × 100% = PHP 700
If an employee works on a Regular Holiday, they get double pay (200%).
Example: PHP 700 × 200% = PHP 1,400
If the holiday falls on the employee’s rest day and they work, they get 260% pay.
Example: PHP 700 × 260% = PHP 1,820
| Work Status | Pay Computation |
| Did not work | No pay (unless company policy says otherwise) |
| Worked (on workday) | 130% of daily wage |
| Worked on rest day | 150% of daily wage (130% + 30%) |
Examples:
Employee earns 130% of daily wage.
Example: PHP 700 × 130% = PHP 910
Though mathematically 169%, DOLE simplifies this to 150%.
Example: PHP 700 × 150% = PHP 1,050
| Work Status | Pay Computation |
| Did not work | No pay |
| Worked | 100% of daily wage |
Examples:
No pay unless company policy or CBA states otherwise
Example: PHP 0
Employee receives regular daily wage.
Example: PHP 700 × 100% = PHP 700
| Scenario | Computation | Result |
| Worked on Regular Holiday | 650 × 200% | ₱1,300 |
| Worked on Special Non-Working Day | 650 × 130% | ₱845 |
| Worked on Regular Holiday + Rest Day | 650 × 260% | ₱1,690 |
| Absent on Special Non-Working Day | 0 | ₱0 |
